Behind the anecdotes there is a procedure most people postpone for life, and there is one month a year when it costs half. The national campaign September, Month of the Will is in its 24th edition and offers discounts of 50% and up to 90% at notaries across all 32 states, plus free legal advice.

During the campaign many notaries also open on Saturdays, precisely for people who cannot go during the week.

What it costs by state

These are preferential rates reported for the 2026 campaign. They vary a lot, so confirm the one for your state before going:

• Chiapas: around 1,000 pesos, the most accessible in the country.
• Jalisco: about 2,300 pesos.
• Tabasco: about 2,500 pesos plus VAT.
• Mexico City: around 3,800 pesos.
• Nayarit: about 4,100 pesos.

In states such as Chihuahua, State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz and Zacatecas each notary sets their own rate, so it is worth asking two or three.

What you need to bring

Less than people imagine. You go to a public notary with your official ID, give the details the notary asks for and pay the fee. You do not need deeds or inventories: the notary guides you on whatever applies in your case.

And no, making a will does not mean handing everything over today. You can change it as many times as you like: the most recent one always stands.
