Before deleting anything: save the playlists

This is the part nobody can undo later. Deleting the account removes all of their playlists, and for many people those playlists are the closest thing to a diary the person left behind: what they listened to while driving, what they played at their wedding, what they put on when they could not sleep.

Before cancelling, spend ten minutes on this:

  • Take screenshots of the playlists that matter, with the track names visible.
  • If a playlist is public or collaborative, save it to your own account: it will survive even after theirs is closed.
  • Write down the songs they played most. Families often use them later at the anniversary or the farewell.

Spotify publishes no bereavement process

Worth saying plainly so you do not waste time looking for it: unlike Facebook or Google, Spotify does not publish a specific procedure for the accounts of people who have died, and it has no memorial accounts. What exists are two practical routes.

If you have access to the account’s email, you can cancel the subscription from the settings. If you do not, you have to write to support explaining the situation and provide whatever documentation they ask for.

Watch who is actually billing

If Spotify was paid through Apple, Google Play or a phone company, cancelling inside Spotify will not stop the charge. It has to be cancelled where the billing originates. Check the bank statement to see who appears as the biller.

If the account was on the free tier, there is no rush at all: it generates no charges and you can take all the time you need.
